Baby Turkeys

Hurst Family Thanksgiving on the Little Red

Hurst Family Thanksgiving on the Little Red

This year, we are thankful for baby turkeys.  I have tried to write this for several days now but every time I tried to write everything I was thankful for, it just didn’t seem to do it justice.  A couple of times, I was just too emotional to finish writing.  The word “thankful” just isn’t enough.

This season has been crazy busy for us. Between making bath products to prepare for the holiday selling season, catering gigs, frying turkeys and making deliveries of turkey and pork that were raised here on the farm, it has been a whirlwind.

So yesterday, as we were debriefing the past few weeks (like Steve and I frequently do), Steve said something profound that we agree represents our feeling for this Thanksgiving.  We are thankful for baby turkeys.

They represent everything we have worked so hard to accomplish this year.  The fact that people were gathered with their families and friends, saying grace around turkeys that we raised and/or cooked is incredibly humbling. Our dear friend, Statia has been one of our biggest supporters and when she sent us these pictures of her Thanksgiving meal which included turkeys raised here and deviled eggs provided by our hens, tears popped into my eyes.  What an incredible honor for us to have been part of this process.

Those baby turkeys represent a journey that we’ve been on since we bought the farm.  Our goal was to self-sustain as much as possible, find business opportunities where we can work together and create revenue streams that allow us to continue down this path, be there for our girl and raise her right and drink coffee together every single day. Today, we have pork and poultry in the fridge from animals that we have loved, cared for and who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our family; we’ve launched our essential oil and diffuser business; we are making bath products and we can’t keep up with the demand; our girl is thriving and she is our ultimate source of pride; and we have coffee together every single day.  For all that, I am thankful.

We are humbled by the support of our friends, family and followers.  Every time you like a post, comment on a picture, share our posts on your page, share words of encouragement and buy something from us, it matters.  Our mission has always been to make people smile and bring a little joy to people around us.  We hope we’ve been able to do that this year. It’s also been such a blessing to reconnect with old friends and meet new people that will be lifelong friends through this crazy journey. Our family has leaned in to help us when we needed it the most.  And for all of that, we are so thankful.

Tears are puddling as I try to finish writing this because the words just aren’t enough. We are here, at this place, on this farm, by the grace of God and we are able to do what we love every day because of the support of our people.  Denis Waitley says, “Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed.  Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace and gratitude.”

Live every minute with love, grace and gratitude.

Live every minute with love, grace and gratitude.

That’s my wish for you over this holiday season and forever.

Last night, as we gathered with our family for Thanksgiving, saying grace around our turkeys, ham and deviled eggs and holding hands with the people that we love, I was overwhelmed by the feeling that I’m one lucky girl, full of love, grace and gratitude who is very thankful for baby turkeys.
